Hunter Lawrence delivered a commanding performance at Round 16 of the 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship in Denver, closing the gap to championship leader Ken Roczen to just a single point heading into next week’s winner-take-all finale in Salt Lake City.
Racing at Empower Field at Mile High, the Honda HRC Progressive rider controlled the 450SMX Class Main Event from start to finish, crossing the line 13.2 seconds ahead of Progressive Insurance Cycle Gear Suzuki’s Roczen to set up a historic showdown between the two international athletes.
The tension-filled 20 Minutes + 1 Lap Main Event began with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado grabbing the holeshot ahead of Lawrence and hometown favourite Eli Tomac, who was making his anticipated return from injury. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cooper Webb, the reigning Supercross champion, slotted into fourth ahead of red plate holder Roczen.
Lawrence wasted no time attacking for the lead, taking control on the second lap as Webb moved into third and Roczen advanced to fourth after Tomac stalled his motorcycle and dropped several positions. With a clear track ahead, the Australian quickly built a multi-second advantage, forcing Roczen to push forward through the field.
The German rider worked his way past Webb and Prado to claim second place, but faced a 4.5-second deficit to Lawrence with just under 17 minutes remaining. As the lead pair pulled away, Tomac mounted an impressive comeback charge, passing both Prado and Webb to reclaim podium position just past halfway.

Lawrence continued to extend his lead throughout the race, eventually building a commanding 10-second gap that put the victory out of reach. The Australian secured his fifth win of the season whilst Roczen maintained his slim championship advantage with second place. Tomac’s third-place finish marked his ninth podium of the season and the 111th of his Supercross career, tying him with Jeremy McGrath for second all-time.
The dramatic finish to Webb’s championship hopes came late in the race when he crashed whilst battling with Prado, finishing 11th and being mathematically eliminated from title contention. Lawrence and Roczen now share the class lead in both wins (five each) and podiums (12 each) as they pursue their maiden premier class Supercross crowns.
In the Western Divisional 250SMX Class, newly crowned back-to-back champion Haiden Deegan continued his record-breaking campaign with a dominant victory. The Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing rider led every lap of the 15 Minutes + 1 Lap Main Event, taking the chequered flag 3.5 seconds ahead of Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Levi Kitchen, with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Ryder DiFrancesco in third.
Deegan’s seventh victory of the season moved him into sole possession of third on the all-time 250SMX Class wins list with 14 career victories. The win also set a new single-season record for 250SMX Class wins by a manufacturer, with Yamaha’s 15 victories coming from five different riders.

The championship battle for second in the West Division remains tight, with just eight points separating Kitchen (2nd), Max Anstie (3rd), and DiFrancesco (4th) heading into the East/West Showdown finale.
The 2026 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship concludes on 9th May at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, with live coverage available exclusively on Peacock from 1 p.m. ET.
