Turner Clinches Third WMX Title Despite Cannon’s Ironman Dominance

Lachlan Turner secured her third consecutive Women’s Motocross Championship title at Ironman Raceway, overcoming two crashes and a challenging weekend to clinch the crown by just six points over rival Charli Cannon. The final round of the 2026 WMX Championship delivered drama as Cannon dominated both motos whilst Turner fought through adversity to claim the championship.

The title battle came to a head at the historic Ironman National in Crawfordsville, Maryland, where the season-long rivalry between Altus Motorsports bLUcRU Yamaha’s Turner and Quad Lock Honda’s Cannon reached its climax across Friday and Saturday’s motos.

Turner stamped her authority early by topping both qualifying sessions with a 2:18.740 lap time, more than two seconds clear of Cannon. However, qualifying pace didn’t translate to moto success as the Australian encountered repeated problems in the same wooded section.

In Friday’s opening moto, Cannon grabbed the holeshot and controlled the race from the front. Turner applied pressure throughout but lost ground when she veered off course in the woods section. A second crash in the same area late in the moto dropped her to sixth, handing Cannon a crucial wire-to-wire victory by 24.4 seconds over Spanish rider Daniela Guillen, who impressed on her U.S. debut.

Saturday’s finale saw similar drama unfold. Running side-by-side off the start, Cannon again took the holeshot with Turner briefly taking the lead before crashing in the troublesome woods section for the third time that weekend. Remounting in 17th position, Turner faced a mathematical nightmare—she needed to finish tenth or better to secure the title.

Whilst Cannon cruised to another commanding victory ahead of Mayla Herrick, Turner mounted a championship-worthy comeback. Patiently picking off riders one-by-one, she clawed her way back to fourth position in a remarkable 13-position recovery that sealed her third consecutive crown.

Cannon’s 1-1 sweep marked her most dominant performance on U.S. soil and her second overall victory of the season, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Turner’s season-long consistency. Herrick claimed a career-best second overall with 3-2 finishes, whilst Guillen’s podium debut (2-3) showcased her world-class credentials before returning to Europe to pursue the MXW title.

Ironically, Turner clinched the championship with her first-ever finish off the overall podium, fourth place with 5-4 moto scores. The final points margin of six highlighted just how close the championship battle had been throughout the six-round campaign.

A dramatic tiebreaker saw Mikayla Nielsen edge Jordan Jarvis for third in the final championship standings, with both riders finishing on 190 points. Nielsen’s tiebreaker advantage gave the SLR Honda rider the final podium position for the second consecutive season.

The WMX will return for a special postseason appearance at the Monster Energy SMX World Championship Final on 26 September at Thunder Ridge Nature Arena in Ridgedale, Missouri.
